Maths Games Day 2010
On Wednesday 21st July four boys from Year 8 travelled to Penleigh and Essendon Grammar School to compete against 134 teams of year 8 students from schools across Melbourne in the 14th annual MAV Maths Games Day. That’s over 500 of the state’s best mathematicians!!!
Kamalpreet, Marcus, Tim and Victor represented The Lakes in the fierce competition. The first 3 rounds consisted of number puzzles and dice games. The boys powered through and finished these rounds on a total of 24 points and in 54th position. As the students had a break for a BBQ lunch they were entertained by the school band and prepared themselves for a challenging afternoon. In the last 2 rounds for the day the boys worked hard on the challenging problem solving questions to finish with a very respectable 48 points and in 90th position.
The Games Day was a very successful and challenging day and a big congratulations goes out to the boys for their outstanding efforts.

Integrated Excursion
As part of their Integrated program, year 8 students visited Hawkstowe Park last week where they learnt had hands on experience drawing topographical maps. They also visited the State Emergency Service in Broadmeadows, where students learnt how to use equipment and all about the important role the SES play in natural disasters. I'm sure that the excursion helped to consolidate what they have been studying in Integrated and relate their students to the world around them.
One student commented that “it showed us that there are a lot of people in need around the world and these people volunteer their time to help.”
The excursion was a great opportunity to put their learning into action in the local community and was a very rewarding experience for students.
Check out the pictures of 8 A and C during their visit to the SES.
